Just 15 miles from Novato, Mount Tamalpais (Mount Tam) – the highest peak in Marin – offers both a taste of ancient and recent history coupled with spectacular scenery and views over San Francisco Bay.
Coastal Miwok Indians lived in the Mount Tamalpais area for thousands of years before Europeans arrived in the late 18th century. It has more than 50 miles of hiking trails connecting to a larger, 200 mile long trail system. There are also great trails for both mountain bikes and road bikes.
Excellent facilities can be found within the park, including picnic spots at The Bootjack Picnic Area, plus a Visitor center, small railroad museum, picnic area and fully accessible restrooms at the East Peak Summit. There are also camping opportunities within Mount Tamalpais.
