Theater is alive and well in Novato as Marin Summer Theater launches its current lineup of performances for the 2015 season. Founded in 2008, this company of talented student performers has received numerous accolades including ten BroadwayWorld San Francisco awards in 2014 for excellence in local theater, and five National Youth Arts awards in 2013.
Student artists range in age from 13 through 23 and must audition for this competitive program. They comprise all aspects of the performing arts including actors, singers, musicians, directors, designers, technicians, and crew.
Each summer, MST performs three different productions over the course of a seven-week season. Shows are performed at the Emily Gates Arts Center on the San Marin High School campus, and at the Novato High School Performing Arts Center in Novato.
This year’s program kicks off with the acclaimed Stephen Sondheim musical, Into the Woods, which opens June 25 for a two weekend run (excluding July 4), followed by musical revue Defying Gravity: The Best of Stephen Schwartz, from July 9-12, and culminates with Tony Award-winning musical, In the Heights, from July 22 through August 2. Both matinee and evening performance times are offered.
